book review: Nathan's Story

Hello, my dear friends!

I once again have the wonderful opportunity to share a lovely little children's book with you...

Name of book: Nathan's Story

Author:  Michael J. McHugh
Format:  Hard Cover
Ages: 1+
Overall Rating: 5 stars

 This book, Nathan's Storyis a sweet and simple to understand retelling of the story which the prophet Nathan came and told King David illustrating the error of the king's way.  The story of the rich man and his abundance of wealth- his fields of sheep, his grand house, and many servants- in contrast to the story of the poor man- a widower with his two little sons barely getting enough to eat- but whose delight was the little lamb that he and his sons cherished as a pet.
 The opposite lives of the two men collide when the rich man is visited by a traveling friend and he wants to feed him a good meal- the problem is, he doesn't want the expense...

 The tale woven is one of greed and envy- but ultimately resulting in brokenness and redemption.

The book is divided up into six short chapters, each with their own teaching guide- a type of devotional with scripture passages to think about concerning what was read.

-Worldview: Christian.

-Character Qualities: Contentment, Brokenness

Final thoughts or comments:
  I was thrilled reading this book as I saw the sweet illustrations, the simple language, and the ratio of words to page- it was sheer brilliance!  As you all know, I have 8 younger siblings and have quite a frustration when the 3-year-old gets bored looking at the same illustration for 5 minutes as I'm trying to get through the second or third paragraph on the page! What a pleasant surprise to see that Mr. McHugh did a fabulous job capturing the perfect balance for those sweet little attention spans.
  The devotionals in the back of the book are good and biblical- helping to reach into the Word and reveal what God says about the problems that arise for the characters in each chapter. My only apprehension with them is that they may be a bit tiresome for younger children- but definitely a blessed resource for children (and adults!) that can understand.

raindrops...

Sometimes as we see the dark storm clouds rolling in- darkening our world in a dismal gray- we are tempted to be depressed.  "Woe is me!  Where is the sunshine?"
We feel as though the world isn't right until the sky is clear, the sun radiant upon your face, blooming flowers grace the air with fragrance, and the music of birds fill the atmosphere.
Or is it?

When we come upon a storm in our life- when something doesn't go our way, when tragedy strikes, when we are having relational issues- life seems gray, dull, without a point.  We lose motivation and drive, we lose sight of our goal in Christ- IF we allow it.

James 1:2-3 says,
"Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials;
knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance."

It is what you make it- will you allow it to tear down your character- wallow in self-pity, stare out the window, noting the gray sky, the muddy messes that are pooling up?  Or will you dance in it?  Run outside, spin round and round, splash in the puddles, let it wash you- for the testing of your faith produces endurance-

"And let endurance have it's perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
James 1:4

Watch the flowers when the rain falls- how much more vibrant are they after a storm?

audio review: The White Gypsy

Hello, my dear friends!

  Oh my, I just finished listening to the very last episode of The White Gypsy audio drama last night.  Hmm... maybe I should start over.
  The White Gypsy is a tale that begins with a delightful little train ride in which a young mother and her two young sons, Willie, aged six, and Dickie, a few years younger, were traveling in the white of winter.  Their father was in poor health, riding in a separate part of the train...

Willie was making pleasant and entertaining conversation with one of the fellow passengers when the unexpected happened.  The train wrecked, scattering people in every direction onto the snow, Willie being one of them.  The mother and Dickie were still safe within the confines of the train car, but when the father found Willie, no pulse was to be found.  He was left as dead while the injured passengers were cared for.
  As a gypsy woman and her husband were passing by, they couldn't help but notice the beautiful  and valuable buttons found on the dead boy's coat.  For fear of being caught, taking too long stealing the boy's jacket, the gypsies pick him up and carry him to their camp.  It was there that Willie was accidentally revived- he was alive!
  When the poor father came back to the spot where his boy lay so as to carry him off to his final resting place he was distraught to discover that the body was gone!  After searching everywhere, asking others who had helped with other bodies and injured passengers, checking the morgue, the father- knowing how distressed his wife would be at the thought of her boy's death much less that his body was missing and knowing that his own death was near- decided to confide this information to one person.  He gave a key to his desk drawer to Major Sartoris, if Willie were ever to be found, there was a letter to him, and all the information surrounding his disappearance.
  Meanwhile Willie was living with the gypsies, his blonde hair and fair skin being dyed dark, his body being vilely drugged constantly that he might not remember his former life.  He was forced to sing and beg for money- but God used that shameful occupation to open an unexpected door that led to many more over ten years- that ultimately led him home.
  I read the book a year or so ago and it was fabulous- I listened to the audio drama and it was fantastic!  Most of the cast was perfectly chosen, the acting was superb- George's part was probably our favorite...  One thing that did bother me a bit though, was the parts outside the story- the scenes in Finnian Jones' "Exploratorium".  They were a little cheesy for my taste- and they seemed to disrupt the "effect" at the very end.  These scenes though, take up so little of the audio drama that they are barely worth mentioning- the story in it's remembrance was amazing and beautiful.

Book Review: Answers Book 4 Teens Vol. 1

Author(s): Bodie Hodge, Tommy Mitchell, with Ken Ham
Publisher: Master Books
Ages: 14+
Page Count: 95
Format: Softcover
Overall Rating: 3 stars

The Answers Book 4 Teens is a great resource that offers basic, hardcore facts surrounding Biblical Christianity and Creationism.  Written in straight forward and simple language, the book steers itself towards the more secular and worldly teens searching for answers a midst great darkness.  Topics discussed include the age of the earth, world population, reliability of the Bible and more.

 As I was reading this book I must confess to being a bit disappointed.  I was looking for something that had more "meat" to it- more in depth apologetics, archaeological discoveries, scientific evidences for Creation.  It felt as though I was being spoken down to, as though everything needed to be explained to me in little words.  For example, "according to the genealogies (those lists with all the 'begat' words)".  Now, nothing is wrong with that- necessarily. (I do believe that teenagers should be able to understand what a genealogy is without any one explaining it to them.)
  However,  I believe that this book would make an excellent resource for a more secular or worldly teen looking for answers- especially one that is unsaved! Large graphics and images, as well as interesting styling and small amounts of words per page lend itself to an appealing and "readable" book for the average teen.

  I do want to mention though, if you are a young person that has been in the faith for a few years- has been raised by Christian parents and perhaps even home schooled, there is not much of a reason for you to read this book simply based on the fact that it is not aimed towards you as an audience and you may already know everything that it has to say.  A much better thing for you to read if you would like more in-depth looks at Creation Science and Christian Apologetics is the Answers Books 1, 2, & 3.

I received this book at no charge from New Leaf Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

to everything there is a season...

There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—

A time to give birth and a time to die;

A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.

A time to kill and a time to heal;

A time to tear down and a time to build up.

A time to weep and a time to laugh;

A time to mourn and a time to dance.

A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones;

A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.

A time to search and a time to give up as lost;

A time to keep and a time to throw away.

A time to tear apart and a time to sew together;

A time to be silent and a time to speak.

A time to love and a time to hate;

A time for war and a time for peace.

{Ecclesiastes 3:1-8}

Sometimes we don't understand what God is doing.  Sometimes life doesn't make sense.  Why, God? Why did you take that away?

Have you ever felt this way?  Take comfort, my friend!  To everything there is a season- perhaps it is not the time for whatever it is that God has closed the door on- or taken away.

He knows the number of hairs upon your head- He would never want His child to be in undue pain or distress.  Trust that God knows the times and seasons- and that He has an ultimate plan in which He will be glorified.

Have a wonderful day, my friends!

whatever you do...

Oh, how I love this verse!

So often we can get caught up in the "glamour" of serving the Lord by going to other countries to preach the gospel.  By doing "big time missions" to serve God. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with serving God in those areas- but I feel that we may put too much emphasis on them and not enough emphasis on serving God in the little things.

Years and years ago when my dad was very young, a coworker was encouraging him in the faith.  I don't remember exactly what happened but I believe that the coworker was being downgraded in his job- his attitude was joyful anyway!  My dad asked him why and he replied, "If all I'm doing is sweeping streets, I'm going to sweep those streets for Jesus."  My dad now carries and reflects that in all that he does- and he is teaching us now.

I once heard a talk by Louie Giglio about careers regarding this.  His proposal was whatever career you choose- you do it to the very best of your ability so that when people see your work they wonder why it is done with such excellence- why it shines so much brighter than the world's.  I would encourage you in this whole-heartedly.

But what I really want to encourage you in is applying that right now.  Meaning, when you have a chore to do- don't just get by- get it done to the glory of God- for it is the Lord Christ whom you serve!  For me, every dish that I wash, every toilet I clean, every surface I dust, every floor that I vacuum, every piece of laundry that I fold, let it reflect my love for Jesus and my desire to serve Him.  Let when I practice my guitar or my trombone the sound flow from my lips or my hands- out of love for my Savior- not because I have to.  When I'm making a meal for my family let it be a marked difference in the loving way that it is planned and prepared than that of someone who is not serving the Lord.  Because it's not for me, it's not even for my family, it's for Jesus that I do my work with excellence.

Do you have work that the Lord has set before you that you have been doing with the mind of pleasing men instead of pleasing God? I would encourage you to turn your eyes up, serve Jesus in everything you do {Queue Steven Curtis Chapman song}.  Show the world that Christians aren't mediocre in anything. Make a mark on the world so that they know, "This job was done for Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world!" and they will either shrink away from it in disgust, or be drawn to it to be saved- this is your mission field.  By the world, it can be anyone unsaved- even down to your younger (or older) brothers and sisters that see you all the time doing the little things...

Another thing, keep this in mind, "'Well done, good and faithful slave.  You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.'" {Matthew 25:23b}

Have a fabulous day, my friends!

I feel so blessed!

As I have been working and waiting upon the Lord concerning the Lamplighter Guild, two wonderful people have offered to bless me with fundraisers...  allow me to introduce you to them.

The first is a lovely artist, Lisa Mistiuk.

She is a wonderful woman who loves the Lord and glorifies Him through her gifts- painting and art!  I have been so blessed by her sweet disposition.  She is teaching my two younger sisters art- sketching at the moment and every time they get home from a class they say something like, "That was exactly what I needed to hear!" or "So that's what I was missing!".  She has been a true blessing to our family.

My sister and I babysit her sweet little boy who just turned one...

(this is one of her paintings of him when he was littler!  My favorite...)

Aren't her paintings beautiful?

She generously placed one of her paintings up for auction as a fundraiser for my Guild tuition...  wasn't that the sweetest thing?

Here's the painting that she put up for auction:
It is one of my favorites...  I saw it in her house one day and loved it!
(She didn't realize this when she put it up for auction...)  :-)

~

The next wonderful person is my aunt, Caroline, who sells Lilla Rose products. She offered to set up an online party for me as a fundraiser!  She has always been such a blessing to me- taking the time out of her busy day of caring for her ten children to help me out...  I love you, Aunt Carrie!

Lilla Rose offers a beautiful assortment of classy, lovely and intricate yet practical hair accessories- they come in several different sizes so that you can choose the perfect fit for your hair type!

 Here are some of my favorites:

Click here to see all of the different sizes and styles that Lilla Rose offers. (If you need to figure out the right size for your hair, click here to watch an instructional video to help you out!) All of the profits from the party will go towards my tuition at the Guild.  If you are interested, I would encourage you to make your purchases by Thursday, the 14th.  My aunt has also generously offered a deal-
buy 3 get 1 free!*
*Once you put in your order for three or more items, my aunt will contact you by email with a coupon for a free item!

Thank you all for your prayers and support...  I feel so blessed and loved to have such wonderful friends!

"Yet those who wait for the LORD
         Will gain new strength;
         They will mount up with wings like eagles,
         They will run and not get tired,
         They will walk and not become weary."
Isaiah 40:31

Book Review: Take Back the Land (and another giveaway!)

Name: Take Back the Land
Author: Rick Boyer
Format: Softcover
Pages: 253
Ages: 14+

  Wow.  This is one of the most amazing books that I have ever read in my life. (And I've read a lot of books!)

  Rick Boyer is sending a message out to my generation.  Be homeschooled or not, Mr. Boyer has a challenge for us:  Take back the land.
  Through his book Mr. Boyer shows us the problems going on in our country- he reveals how they are contrary to not only the Word of God but also to the way that our forefathers originally intended this country to be.
  But first (this was my favorite part) he exhorts us to "grow up".  "Don't waste your youth" is the title of the chapter in which Mr. Boyer basically tells us that he is not going to talk down to us, we are adults and he is going to treat us as such.  No childish behavior or short attention spans allowed- how can you impact the world if you are still sucking on a bottle?  The world glorifies youth.  It encourages us to "never grow up".  I want to encourage you- "Grow up!" Be responsible, show the world that you aren't an "Angry Birds" champion - you are an adult that holds responsibility and is careful with his/her time.  You would rather change the world for the better then be satisfied with mediocrity.
  Mr. Boyer goes on to reveal to us that we are the "Joshua Generation".  Those before us (the "Moses Generation") led us out of Egypt- out of slavery- we were given the rights to be homeschooled.  These rights were bought with an incredible price- Mr. Boyer attests to this with some of his own history.  But now, as my generation is entering the Promised Land, there are foes that have risen up and taken over.  God has called us, as He called the Israelites, to wipe them out- one at a time.
  On to more practical points, Mr. Boyer in the remaining chapters goes into specific detail on the problems in different areas of our nation, Education, Media, Family, Church, and more.  At the closing of each chapter he does not leave us hanging our heads ("woe is me!")- he shows us a practical way that we can be the solution in our land and bring about positive change.

 I was incredibly encouraged by this book!  It was well-written, though sometimes a lot to take in therefore a challenge to read- but it was exactly the wake-up call that I believe my generation needs.  I was so blessed to be able to read about the specific problems, how they occurred, and how they can be solved.  I wasn't even finished with it yet and I was recommending it to everyone!

  Thank you, Mr. Boyer, for such an encouragement to my generation!  I was so blessed by your book- and I pray that others in my generation will feel the same that we might rise up as one...

So are you loving what you hear so far?

this summer...

Hello, my dear friends!

A week or so ago I had the blessed privilege of volunteering at the Lamplighter Publishing booth during our state's annual homeschool conference.  I had a wonderful time- talking about books- all day- for two days- <insert angels singing, "Hallelujah Chorus"> and working with awesome people!

 I had the opportunity to meet Mark Hamby, the president of Lamplighter Ministries, and work side by side with him.  On the last day, before I went home, he prayed over me with my family for my future, and he encouraged me to start praying about coming to the Lamplighter Guild this summer.  I had been thinking about it- not very long because the price seemed too high for me- but now I decided to do just as he said, really seriously pray about it.

I am convinced that the Lord has His hand on the Lamplighter Guild and that I will be majorly benefited  and educated by attending.  Our family has been really pressing in on working on our family ministry- which I have been so "hush hush" about with you all- and it fits right into the vision.

Over the past couple of years our family has really been developing our musical gifts- singing together for nursing homes and in front of abortion mills.  At the same time we began a commitment to read the Bible together every day as a family.  Our dream is to encourage fellow believers in the faith with our music and by other means, to spend more time together as families- to read together, the Bible and good Christian literature, to bring them closer together.  Lamplighter books have made such a blessed impact upon our family that we are now selling them ourselves (more on that later) and we hope to someday soon create little skits and hopefully plays based on the books.

Before I say any more- what is the Lamplighter Guild?

"The Lamplighter Guild for Creative Disciplines is an entrepreneurial platform whereby masters will mentor apprentices through passionate, creative, and compelling instruction, motivating each lea rner to cultivate a high level of excellence in order to uniquely reflect the image of God in their work and life."

The event is taking place from July 15-20, 2012 at the Mohonk Mountainhouse in Catskills, New York.

I'm hoping to go to the Guild to study the Dramatic Arts- especially script writing and musical composition.  I feel that these lessons would benefit me greatly for my father's ministry and encourage me in the direction of ultimately my Father's business by using the skill and talents with which He has bestowed me.

I am very excited about this and pray that the Lord will provide a way for me to attend this year.

I covet your prayers as I pursue this venture- that the Lord's will be done!

The financial barrier is the only thing that stands in the way- for the cost is $1950 and it is due by June 15th.  I had not considered attending the Guild until recently and this is why I have not been able to save sufficient funds.  I have applied for and been approved of a scholarship which covers part- but I am still in quite a great need of the rest.

I do not want to ask for you to give me money- I want to work hard for it!  That is why I have joined the Lamplighter Affiliate program.  Any purchase that you make from Lamplighter Publishing using my special code, 30% commission will go towards my tuition.

My Code: GUILD66

In addition to this I am using all of the profits from my Etsy store from now until June 15th to go towards my tuition.

If I am unable to raise sufficient funds my June 15th then I plan on continuing to save so that I might go next year- but you never know what God may do in the meantime....  :-)

As I said, I covet your prayers!

So, do you need some suggestions on which books or audio dramas to buy?

Start here:
(click the images to be directed!)

This book my family read together- we loved it!
"This first book of the Lamplighter Rare Collector Series continues to be a best-seller. James, the king's gardener, teaches his 15-year-old daughter Mary all the principles of godliness through his flowers. She is falsely accused of stealing, and the penalty is death. Mary remembers her father had taught her: that it is better to die for the truth than to live for a lie, and that the worst pillow to sleep on is the pillow of a guilty conscience! This story will change your life forever!"

*Update: I had to add this book (below)- I couldn't believe I had forgotten it!  :-) *
One of the most inspiring books that I have ever read!  Ask any of my friends- this book is one of my top 3 favorite books...
"You will never read a story that is more inspiring and challenging than Ishmael. The heights of success achieved by this young man reveal little of the utter poverty into which he was born. He entered life motherless and poor, and despite the wishes of everyone around, he survived and flourished in his paltry environment. His commitment to character and integrity and his singular focus on preserving his mother’s name gave his life focus and purpose. His perseverance and determination to educate himself in law gave him the opportunity to influence the highest levels of government. E.D.E.N. Southworth captures the rich panorama of sights and sounds in rural Maryland in the decades prior to the Civil War. When you reach the end, don’t despair!—the drama continues in the sequel, Self-Raised!"

Everyone who has read this book says how much they love it- at the conference I described it as basically everything you could want in a novel wrapped up into one- mystery, suspense, a bit of romance, comedy...
"Reader, beware! Once you begin this novel, you will not be able to put it down! The Hidden Hand is strewn with mystery and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. You will find yourself laughing aloud at some of Capitola's antics. But don't let her feisty, mischievous character and Old Hurricane's cantankerous personality derail you from seeing the gracious providence of an all-wise God. His hidden hand can be seen at work in the most difficult situations. The Hidden Hand is the book to reach for if you're looking for a good dose of drama and adventure!"

This is one of my absolute FAVORITES...  Based on an actual historical mystery, this novel is like a historical Hidden Hand!

"This suspenseful, historical novel takes place during the period when France's King Louis XIV renounces the Edict of Nantes and declares Protestantism illegal. Tolerance is a thing of the past, and we find a band of Huguenot refugees bravely facing one narrow escape after another. But the peril of the tumultuous seas is the least of their worries‚--little do they know what terrors lie ahead! Even through the kidnapping and endless corruption, they stand firm and confident in the providence of God.

Prisoners of the Sea gives little relief from its unyielding tension and suspense, but the jaw-dropping revelation doesn‚'t come until the very last chapter!"

The very first Lamplighter book that I ever read...  Gerty's loyalty to Willie is something that has been mentioned more than once in our home as an example us about how we should love one another.  A sweet story- until you get pulled with the suspense towards the end!

"You'll soon discover why The Lamplighter outsold The Scarlet Letter ten to one in 1850! In fact, Nathaniel Hawthorne was livid about the moral truths presented in The Lamplighter, which overshadowed his attempt to influence society with a secular worldview. In this poignant novel, Gerty stands alone in the fearfully cold night until the old lamplighter sees what others cannot. Simple in mind but not in heart, he takes on the role of father and protector. His blind friend tempers the rough edges of Gerty's heart, as she becomes the instrument that God uses to open the eyes of the blind and bring light to those whose hearts have been scarred by life's dark moments. This story left such an impression on my life that I decided to name our ministry Lamplighter!"

I read this book myself and cried- even though my sister had already given away the ending!  My dad read it aloud to us- guess what?  I cried again....  such a sweet story :-)
"It takes unwavering courage to withstand the power of peer pressure, especially when it requires standing alone. Geoffrey's demonstration of true friendship and faith knows no bounds. The ridicule and taunting he endures does not prevent him from risking his life for the safety of his “friends.” But when he must face the ultimate challenge, will Geoffrey have the strength to remain true to the last?"

This audio drama is definitely one of the best that they have made- one of my favorites- the lesson is so simple yet sometimes so hard to follow...

"In a breathtaking story based on Psalm 32, David Aspinall is searching for something. Deep in his heart he longs for something better than home. The inheritance of the family farm just isn't enough to fill his longing for wealth and adventure. As the seeds of discontent take root, David makes a choice from which there may be no return. As he wakes one day in the desert of Africa, scorched by the sun and allured by a mirage, he begins to see what he was so blind to before. His father's parting words echo in his mind: Sometimes, one must lose what he has in order to gain what he needs. Is it too late for David to gain what he needs the most? Is there still time to return? The Wanderer is an epic drama that will powerfully influence its listeners to be "guided by His eye" in order to see that the greatest treasures in life are usually found at home."

The beautiful allegories in this audio drama inspire me...  my favorite scene was about the Keeper of the Well, how even those who are never recognized for their great deeds here on earth will be rewarded by God in heaven...

"Deep into the Vale of Promise ventures a young knight, Sir Constant, who desires nothing more than to be in service of the Great King. Though unworthy of this high calling, he sets forth on the perilous road that all who desire to serve the King must take -- the Splendid Way. His heart, courage, valour, and faith will be tested. His strength and endurance will be challenged. And his allegiance to the one true King will be proven.
Lamplighter Theatre presents this classic allegorical tale -- richly dramatized, scored with breathtaking music, and wrought with biblical truth. In a class all its own, Sir Knight of the Splendid Way will awaken your heart to this powerful truth: 'In the name of the King, I can do all!'"

...anyway- I hope that can help you in getting started!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions- about Lamplighter books, the Guild- anything!
